Veterans Burial Benefits in Illinois

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides burial benefits to eligible veterans and their families. These benefits are available nationwide, regardless of which state you live in. However, some states may offer additional benefits or assistance programs.

Eligibility for VA Burial Benefits

Veterans who meet any of the following criteria may be eligible for VA burial benefits:

• Veterans who served on active duty and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
• Veterans who completed at least 24 months of active duty (or the full period for which called to active duty)
• Veterans who died while on active duty
• Members of the Reserves or National Guard who died from injury or disease incurred or aggravated in the line of duty

Available Benefits

The VA provides several burial and memorial benefits:

• Burial in a VA National Cemetery: Free burial plot, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, and a government headstone or marker
• Headstone or Marker: Available for veterans buried in private cemeteries
• Burial Flag: A United States flag to drape the casket or accompany the urn
• Presidential Memorial Certificate: An engraved certificate signed by the current President
• Burial Allowance: Reimbursement for burial and funeral expenses (if certain conditions are met)

How to Apply

To apply for VA burial benefits:

• Contact your local VA office or call 1-800-827-1000
• Submit VA Form 21P-530, "Application for Burial Benefits"
• Provide the veteran's discharge papers (DD214) and death certificate
• Work with a funeral director who can help coordinate VA benefits
