Reporting a Death to Social Security

You should report the death to Social Security as soon as possible. In most cases, the funeral home will report the death if you provide them with the deceased's Social Security number. You can also report it yourself by calling 1-800-772-1213.

One-Time Death Benefit

A one-time death payment of $255 may be available to:

• A surviving spouse who was living with the deceased at the time of death
• A surviving spouse or child who is eligible for Social Security benefits based on the deceased's record

Survivor Benefits

Eligible family members may receive monthly survivor benefits:

• Surviving Spouse: May receive benefits as early as age 60 (or age 50 if disabled)
• Surviving Spouse with Dependent Children: May receive benefits at any age if caring for a child under 16
• Children: May receive benefits if under 18 (or up to 19 if still in school, or any age if disabled before 22)
• Dependent Parents: May receive benefits if age 62 or older and dependent on the deceased for at least half of their support

What Happens to Social Security Benefits?

• If the deceased was receiving Social Security benefits, the payment for the month of death must be returned
• Any benefits received after the month of death must be returned
